When you first start quilt making, it's tempting to buy all the fabric you can find. But to make your quilting project manageable, start with 2-3 coordinating fabrics for your first quilt. You can always expand your fabric collection as you grow in your quilting journey.

Cutting tips for beginners:

• Use a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat to ensure straight and even cuts.
• Start with simple patterns to avoid overwhelming yourself.

Now that you’ve cut your fabric, it’s time to start sewing! Each quilt block is a basic unit of your quilt, made up of smaller fabric pieces. The key is to keep it simple and focus on perfecting your sewing technique.

How to construct a quilt block:

1. Arrange the fabric pieces into your desired pattern.
2. Sew the pieces together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Many quilting machines come with a 1/4-inch foot to help keep your seam lines consistent. Consider investing in a 1/4-inch foot with a guide—it prevents the fabric from drifting beyond the seam allowance for precise stitching.
3. Press your seams to keep everything neat and trim any loose threads. Trimming threads and pressing as you sew ensures a more professional finish. You can choose to press all seams to one side (usually towards the darker fabric) or press them open—both methods are equally valid and a matter of personal preference.

Once your quilt blocks are ready, it's time to sew them together. Sewing quilt blocks together creates the quilt top—the most exciting step for any beginning quilter! Keep your stitches straight, and don’t be afraid to undo and redo seams as you go.

To make your quilt soft and warm, you need to add a layer of batting between the quilt top and quilt back. Lay the quilt top, batting, and quilt back on a flat surface, and then sew them together. This is known as creating your quilt sandwich. 

Many quilters use an edge guide to stitch decorative or straight rows on their quilt sandwich, ensuring the lines stay perfectly parallel and preventing the layers from shifting. A walking foot or the IDT™/IDF system helps feed all layers evenly, reducing fabric creep. An extension table provides extra support, minimizing fabric pull-away from the needle as you sew.

The final step in your quilting project is to finish the edges by adding binding. This will give your quilt a polished, professional look. There are several ways to bind a quilt: you can purchase premade bias binding, create your own, and either machine or hand sew it, or use a specialty bias binder or quilt binder attachment on your sewing machine. Whatever method you choose, be sure to celebrate completing your first quilt!
